Often our patients wonder when is the right time to start Botox treatment. Looking to get ahead of the wrinkles, we often see patients who are not looking to fill wrinkles, but prevent them from happening in the first place. Let’s take a look at whether this is possible, and if there is such a thing as “too late” or “too soon” when it comes to Botox.
When Should I Begin Botox Treatments?
First, there isn’t a wrong or right time to start anti-aging treatments (the FDA has approved Botox treatments for patients 18 years of age and older). Every person has different skin care needs and different skin care goals. Many people choose to forgo Botox and fillers all together, however those that do wish to pursue Botox treatment, usually do so between the ages of 30-65.
Skin elasticity depends on several things, including your sun exposure and family history, but in their 20s, most people’s skin has sufficient volume and thickness so that it can withstand the creasing movement of the underlying muscle. Usually, the 30s and 40s are when the skin begins to thin noticeably and deep wrinkles could begin to form.
Does Botox Prevent Wrinkles?
Wrinkles develop because as the skin weakens with age, it has difficulty bouncing back after repeated folding caused by the facial musculature (think smiling, laughing, frowning, furrowing your brow, etc.). Botox prevents the flexing of the muscles that fold the skin and eventually cause lines and wrinkles. These lines typically show up around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows, across the forehead and on the side of the nose. Freezing these muscles and quiet the movement of the skin and lessen the likelihood of deep lines.
