Earaches | Willow Grove, PA

When your ear hurts, you may automatically think it is an ear infection.  However, discomfort in and around the ear can be caused by many different problems.  We want our Willow Grove patients to know an earache is often characterized as a sharp, dull, or burning pain in one or both ears. This pain may last a short time, or it can also be ongoing.  Some related conditions include:
  • Otitis media
  • Swimmer’s ear
  • Malignant otitis externa
The Eustachian tube runs from the middle part of each ear to the back of the throat.  This tube drains fluid that is made in the middle ear, and if it becomes blocked, that fluid can build up, which may lead to pressure behind the eardrum or an ear infection. However, as an adult, you may be less likely to suffer from an ear infection, so the pain that you feel in your ear may be coming from another place such as your teeth, joint in the jaw or throat.
Some causes of earaches in adults may include:
  • Arthritis of the jaw
  • Short or long-term ear infection
  • Ear injury from pressure changes
  • Object stuck in the ear or buildup of ear wax
  • Hole in the eardrum
  • Sinus infection
  • Sore throat
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)
  • Tooth infection
Ear pain in a child or infant may be due to an infection, while it can also be from:
  • Ear canal irritation from cotton-tipped swabs
  • Soap or shampoo in the ear
While many home remedies do work in providing relief from an earache, it is important to visit your ENT doctor for further diagnosis and proper treatment.  Your ENT will examine your ear, nose and throat areas to determine the exact cause.
